OASIS
"AN ESCAPE FROM THE CONCRETE JUNGLE"
A large part of One Arts mission is to foster environmental sustainability. The One Art Oasis grew from the need to fulfill this purpose. Embracing the Earth through organic farming, living farm to table, beekeeping, having backyard chickens, growing fruit trees, reducing waste, building with recycled materials, Timebanking, and most importantly, growing together with community.

The One Art Center will continue to work towards being the Philadelphia’s center of urban sustainability. The One Art Oasis Farm will continue to expand as it focuses on transforming several vacant lots (adjacent to the Center) into a sustainable local food system which provides healthy foods, creates new jobs, and offers interactive educational opportunities for the community. We will continue to increase the community’s accessibility to organic fruits and vegetables. As we explore the Art of Gardening and Permaculture design, we also provide education on sustainable practices in our orchard as well as our organic learning garden which offers authentic hands on learning experience. We will also incorporate Earthships, which are a key factor to helping Philadelphia become the leading city for sustainable living. Being the most versatile and economical sustainable green building design, they get electricity from sun and wind and are built with natural and recycled materials. Classes in the Oasis Farm will include Earthship building, alternative energy installation, water catchment systems, as well as the Farm to Table workshops, composting, medicinal plants, canning and preserving. The educational programming in the Oasis Farm will promote healthy environment, healthy living, and empower the community to teach and grow themselves.
OASIS WAY WEST
Oasis Way West
Oasis Way West is a biophilic installation that will bring the healing aspects of One Art onto the streets of West Philly with flowing water, mosaics and bottle-art planters filled with lavender, and blooming vines climbing a rope trellis draped on the facade.
The mission of Oasis Way West is to bring healing to people as they walk through the blossoming biophillic walls of One Art. During these challenging times facing our world, we seek to mitigate some of the stress inflicted upon our community by offering a moment of solace, a place of refuge and a oasis of peace.
Rest for a moment. Take a deep breath, smelling the calming lavender, hear the peaceful waterfalls, see flowers cascading down the walls and enjoy the uplifting art.
BioPhilly
bioPhilly is a biophilic habitat stewardship organization that promotes the important link between human health and access to biodiverse nature in the city. bioPhilly happily contributes biophilic design, research and fundraising to this project.

Orchard

Our orchard has eight different types of fruit trees thanks to Pennsylvania Horicutlture Society (PHS). The trees have been bearing delicious fruits from apples, pears, plums to figs and nectarines. Planting workshop and pruning workshops have taken place. What’s in store for this year? More fruit trees! Thanks to Philadelphia Orchard Project our orchard will double in size. We hope to increase the diversity of trees and also begin preserving the fruits.

TINY HOUSE

We completed our first tiny house project earlier this year and we have already begun working on our second. This house has a full kitchen, bathroom with a shower, and a loft on the second floor. It was made on the cheap using recycled materials and found resources. Stop by and see our progress!

ZERO WASTE

Public Zero Waste Workshops and Young Wise and Thoughtful (YWT) activists workshops has worked to support youth in raising their voice about litter in their city. We are very happy to announce that in 2016, One Art has began to plan for the implementation of our Zero Waste Initiative. With guidance from local Zero Waste Specialists Alisa Shargo, we have began to lay the strategic foundations to alter our operations in order to create the least amount of solid waste impact possible. In 2015 we conducted a waste composition analysis after we hosted a medium size 600+ person event. The composition showed that One Art produced 441.9 lbs. of solid waste and recycling materials at this event. The composition study allowed us to critically observe our waste stream.
Our commitment to true sustainability has driven us to set the following goals:
-
Development of a Community Compost and Education Program
-
Installation of a state of the art water filtration system to reduce impurities and discourage bottled water
-
Design and Installation of a Zero Waste Receptacle System, which includes educational visualizations to inform guests
-
Installation of sanitizing amenities to encourage reuse in house
-
Replacement of single use flatware with reusable materials
